God brings the plagues on Egypt, but Ramses still refuses to set the Hebrews free. At least when Scorsese had a child as a 'God'-like being in Last Temptation of Christ it was for a shorter period of time, and for a more specific purpose. Even so, however, when Moses does warn Ramses about the impending death of the firstborn unless Ramses sets the Hebrew people free, there is some sense of jeopardy in the movie. Yes, Ridley Scott's casting choices are suspect, with Christian Bale (Welsh) playing Moses and Joel Edgerton (Australian) playing Ramses, the pharaoh with whom he is raised as a brother but eventually will battle. Style: epic, scenic, intense, exciting, heroic... By the way, many people (including Christians and Jews) will try to psychoanalyze the filmmakers and the actors, but speculating on their decisions and comments is a futile exercise. Scott truncates the final 40 years or so of Moses' life, so that all of a sudden he's an old man on the verge of reaching Canaan. Interestingly enough, they both leave their families, promise their children they will return, and almost don't make it back.
