As early as May 2020 an anthology called "Tools for Extinction" came out which included work from writers around the world responding to the ongoing crisis and Ali Smith's "Summer" included the pandemic as part of its storyline. This is the third novel by Sarah Moss that I read and she's yet to disappoint. Overall, a really amazing read! I've already preordered my paperback and can't wait for the official release so I can see that beautiful book cover on my bookshelf! Matt's teenage sections are so well constructed as his random thoughts flit from one thing to another, especially food (well he is a teen) but this changes to a feeling of powerlessness which is overwhelming. The other is Rob who is there on the first page and is part of the mountain rescue team that the book blurb perhaps unhelpfully tells us about. She was eating all cookies while she had cancer, bad choice and very gave me stress. Without her mobile phone, Kate is in real danger, particularly as she has told nobody where she was going. This took me through such a range of emotions and at the same time took me back to the second UK lockdown in November 2020. The Fell by Sarah Moss. This was the magic of this book, of this story I really don't like the contents, you really can understand characters. The way some of us resented working all through the pandemic while others were able to have the spring and summer off and then some. I hate to be the one person to disagree with all the great reviews, but while I thought Vincent was Sarah's strongest male lead yet, I thought her story needed a bit more substance and characterization and that the writing wasn't quite on par with what I'm used to seeing from her. Plus, it helps that he's the "bad boy with a heart of gold" (one of my favorite tropes! ) I didn't always agree with them, but I did understand them and they felt quite real.
Here, her canvas is much smaller than the dozen plus narrators of that book, encompassing just 4 main protagonists. My first book by Sarah Sutton was Out of my League, which I really did not enjoy and ended giving it two stars. But I hope for something new from her next book. Overall, I like how Sarah Sutton's books have depth to the experiences the characters have during the story in addition to the romance. I will say, I cried in this story. I also liked how it was shown that panic/anxiety and depression can also sometimes take the form of rage/anger (as a kind of defense mechanism), cause insomnia, pushing people away, and can manifest as hyper productivity (all things that I've experienced personally).
Roots reach deep, bide their time. The stories are genuine, real, and always an excellent read. Can't Catch My Breath is also Sutton's most mature writing. Not forgetting the pre-Covid Severance which was eerily prescient about a virus-ridden world before words like 'self-isolate' were part of our vernacular. Addy is just trying to get her life back on track. Why You Should Switch To Natural Deodorant. She is fantastic at writing romance that is more than just a love story. I really wasn't sure what to expect as I have never been into romance and I don't think I have ready anything this young. Friends & Following. The lovely hares sleep where the long grass folds over them. She muses on the restrictions and difficulties, the problems big and small, and her rather unsatisfactory relationship with her daughter's family. Let's talk about the writing. Their bond was unique, and they played off each other and complimented one other so perfectly. I've never read a Sarah Sutton book I didn't like. Talk about an awkward ice-breaker. I always know what I'll get, so it's safe to jump into them at any given moment in any emotional state. Turns out HE HAD FEELINGS FOR THE BEST FRIEND, and everyone knew⦠bro Vesta was a shitty friend.
So I'm just going to review The Fell as the third of Sarah Moss's shortish novels I've read in the past two years. Yes, it's a pandemic novel but it's unlike others I've read as it deals with the reality of lockdowns, the impact on personalities of isolation and the different way that people experience and react to it. Addy is by far my favorite girl character that Sutton has written. He just lost his father and her friends were so insensitive and made weird comments.. why.
I also liked Vincent's punk rock/bad boy style. As the two avoid conversation about the accident and what happened to their fathers, they eventually have to open up for the purpose of the interview. The only reason they made sense to me was because I knew what she intended for these characters, but for the unsuspecting reader, they'd be like, so what happened...? Ironic though it may seem, I feel like I've found more cogent commentary about our present moment from Moss's historical work. Others, including me, will respond better to Hall's imaginative abstraction of COVID. For some, what Moss has done here will capture a time and a place brilliantly and be an effective way to engaged with the pandemic. I adored every second of it and am so glad I read it! Sodium bicarb is the leading cause of rash, irritation, and sore armpits caused by using natural deodorant. As the product is made from natural raw materials it may be affected by climate changes such as humidity and temperature which will alter the viscosity of this product. It's not for everyone, I'm glad I read it or listen in this case. It was also a far more humane story, due to the focus taken, as well. That said, this is probably my favourite of the three Sarah Moss novels I have read (the other two being Ghost Wall and Summerwater). Nobody need ever know.
