The intense paranoia that can set in once you start to suspect all those things aren't just banal but actually intended to make you act and think a certain way is a feature of postmodern fiction stretching through the work of Thomas Pynchon to today, and Under the Silver Lake taps into that paranoia and makes it its subject. All the things that happen to Sam – including a full-in-the-face skunk spraying which makes everyone recoil from him for the rest of the movie – essentially plant a toxic waste sign on his forehead. Regardless of whether these codes lead to any sort of real-world truth, or even hint at a popular conspiracy theory, the fact that David Robert Mitchell managed to include all of this in the film, while also spinning a story that is entertaining, and compelling, makes this a more interesting movie than it could have been. I asked friends for recommendations, but no one had heard of, let alone watched, this film, so I'm turning to the hive mind. An enigma rapped in a riddle full of bullsh**, Under the Silver Lake is a pointless film about nothing. Yeah, it's not like "It Follows". Her disappearance sends Sam on a journey through the parties and underbelly of Hollywood to find answers that will change his world. Although, that last bit might be noticeable because of the current cultural climate. None of the female characters, and about 20 of them who waft in and out, is anything but a sexual target for Sam. But no matter how shaggy and self-indulgent it is, or how anticlimactic its big so-what of an ending ends up being, I was never bored. The film is full of following and watching — first in scenes that evoke classic Hollywood movies in which characters watch with binoculars or follow at a distance in cars, and then in more contemporary ways, like hidden surveillance cameras and drones. The skeleton of the plot is clearly inspired by Hitchcock classics like Rear Window and Vertigo (as is Disasterpeace's swelling, melodramatic Bernard Herrmann-esque music). In one of the many allusions to Alfred Hitchcock, Sam spends a large amount of time sitting on his balcony watching the topless woman across the courtyard with his binoculars. But, while I didn't enjoy Under the Silver Lake and overall found it annoying, maybe I could be persuaded that it is a failed film by an ambitious and promising young filmmaker (although I have just noticed that Mitchell isn't that young) – maybe if I watch other films directed by Mitchell and find interests I will be able to convince myself that Under the Silver Lake was an honourable failure, rather than just an annoying failure. In Under the Silver Lake, Mitchell has created an ode to Hollywood's history in cinema, with neo-noir tropes and iconography and a feverish nightmare aesthetic that feels at home in a David Lynch piece, but is also a takedown of the misogyny and corruption at its core. "Good to be here, " he says. There's a billionaire who goes missing. That he sees this as not only a revelation but a betrayal, and the work of some vast conspiracy is only half as concerning as what he does or doesn't do with what he thinks he's uncovered. Sam is an interesting character, and his childish ways as an adult are quite endearing in the beginning but as with that too, it got lost in the whole mess. He tells Sam, "None of it matters. Under the Silver Lake stars Andrew Garfield as Sam, a totally unemployed guy: not even an unemployed screenwriter, just unemployed, although his pop-culture cinephile credentials are presented with loads of archly framed classic movie posters dotted about his place, along with comic books, on whose shiny covers he at one stage gets his hand yuckily stuck. David Robert Mitchell caught the film world's attention with his taut, contemporary and thoroughly effective horror It Follows, so hopes were exceedingly high for his follow-up film, Under the Silver Lake. The question is not so much who the dog killer is, but why he is. Because as Sam follows the trail of breadcrumbs that may or may not reunite him with Sarah, the amateur sleuth stumbles into an after-hours world of occultish clues, codes, semiotics, and numerology all hiding in plain sight as pop-culture flotsam and jetsam. It is a pretty obvious takedown by Robert Mitchell of men who use their interests as an escape from real-life, using them as a shield against reality. He also gets a phone call from his mom early on about a TV broadcast that night of Janet Gaynor in 7th Heaven, signaling that Mitchell's Hollywood Dream Factory investigation will loop back as far as the silent era.

If you're not, it's totally understandable. For better or worse it can make life much more interesting than it actually is with the addition of a nice juicy conspiracy theory. Sam's life finally seems to acquire meaning when he begins to suspect, possibly out of paranoia, that the world of pop culture is actually loaded with encoded messages meant for the more wealthy, those who really run the world. The industrious writer/director lays down a set-up that is plucked from the heart of the stacked shelves of genre fiction: let's look for the missing damsel. Whether all its cereal-prize symbolism, illuminati-adjacent mysticism, and ill-fitting puzzle pieces come together for you is purely a matter of taste. The movies have given us roles to play in real life. The director of Under the Silver Lake talks LA history, '80s RPGs and filming down toilet bowls. I would argue the film reaches its thematic climax much earlier in the film than when Sam discovers what happened to Sarah. But damned if I wasn't hanging on every bizarro twist and switchback he pulled out of his hat next. Sam is in denial about having no career to speak of, criminally behind on rent, and passes the time masturbating over Penthouse, or having sportive, disengaged sex, with whoever's currently interested, while both parties gaze at the golden-age Hollywood posters and memorabilia festooned around his place. Andrew Garfield disappears down the rabbit hole in David Robert Mitchell's zany LA noir. Sam meets an out of work actress in a club and they dance to "What's the frequency Kenneth" by REM, Generation X's anthem of malaise still relevant even now. The rest of the film follows Sam as he tries to find out what happened to Sarah. The Big Lebowski, while Inherent Vice is another example of a less comedic film in this subgenre.

But nobody's really going to do that, at least not without taking the TV along with them, and the internet, and a phone too.
