That would explain some of Sam's delirium but again, Mitchell never bothers to resolve. I came to it with high expectations, but the film doesn't meet the picture that's been painted of it on either side of the critical spectrum.
It is interesting to compare this to the private investigators in noir films like Chinatown, Sunset Boulevard, The Third Man, or Double Indemnity (just to name a few) because Sam's life circumstances are entirely his fault. But it is not exactly like anything but itself. The message couldn't be shouted louder than when Sam follows a trail to a creepy mansion with an evil old man who claims to have written every popular song there has ever been and then tries to kill him ending in a shock of gore. With no job and seriously behind on his rent Sam seems to live with no direction, spying on his topless neighbour as she waters her plants and feeds her pets, yet when he has sexual intercourse with an acquaintance who drops by they are both more interested by what is happening on TV.
Under the Silver Lake follows a broke layabout named Sam (Andrew Garfield), who leads a directionless existence in Los Angeles and fails to pay rent. Mitchell had already gained respect with his first film, The Myth of the American Sleepover, and his electrifyingly scary movie made him, as they say, hotter than Georgia asphalt. Although, that last bit might be noticeable because of the current cultural climate. None of the female characters, and about 20 of them who waft in and out, is anything but a sexual target for Sam. But no matter how shaggy and self-indulgent it is, or how anticlimactic its big so-what of an ending ends up being, I was never bored. The film is full of following and watching — first in scenes that evoke classic Hollywood movies in which characters watch with binoculars or follow at a distance in cars, and then in more contemporary ways, like hidden surveillance cameras and drones. The skeleton of the plot is clearly inspired by Hitchcock classics like Rear Window and Vertigo (as is Disasterpeace's swelling, melodramatic Bernard Herrmann-esque music). If you're not, it's totally understandable. For better or worse it can make life much more interesting than it actually is with the addition of a nice juicy conspiracy theory. Sam's life finally seems to acquire meaning when he begins to suspect, possibly out of paranoia, that the world of pop culture is actually loaded with encoded messages meant for the more wealthy, those who really run the world. The industrious writer/director lays down a set-up that is plucked from the heart of the stacked shelves of genre fiction: let's look for the missing damsel. Whether all its cereal-prize symbolism, illuminati-adjacent mysticism, and ill-fitting puzzle pieces come together for you is purely a matter of taste. The movies have given us roles to play in real life. The director of Under the Silver Lake talks LA history, '80s RPGs and filming down toilet bowls. I would argue the film reaches its thematic climax much earlier in the film than when Sam discovers what happened to Sarah. But damned if I wasn't hanging on every bizarro twist and switchback he pulled out of his hat next. Sam is in denial about having no career to speak of, criminally behind on rent, and passes the time masturbating over Penthouse, or having sportive, disengaged sex, with whoever's currently interested, while both parties gaze at the golden-age Hollywood posters and memorabilia festooned around his place. Andrew Garfield disappears down the rabbit hole in David Robert Mitchell's zany LA noir. Sam meets an out of work actress in a club and they dance to "What's the frequency Kenneth" by REM, Generation X's anthem of malaise still relevant even now.
