But before she can really consider this, she realises that it is not the next morning at all. But nothing is that simple and McAllister is not here to suggest that Jen is a bad mother, only that parenting is complex and fraught. It truly makes a huge difference and really helps the show grow. I really enjoyed Wrong Place Wrong Time. "The unstoppable Gillian McAllister is at the top of her game with this ingenious thriller. Gillian McAllister's first hardback publication asks what lengths a woman will go to to save her family. That's what the best twists do for me. 20:50] Cindy: I would think it would, because reading it really made me think about some of those things. I've said it before. What was the wake up call that showed her that wasn't the case and it wasn't her fault what happened? A kind of Quantum Leap for the new millenium (for those old enough to remember it), only instead of Sam Beckett leaping back in time to a key moment that precedes some disastrous event and moving forward in time in a bid to change future history, Jen's journey is led entirely in reverse, each sleep seeing her take an increasingly large leap back in time. I really didn't want it to be over – loved every page of it, and will be recommending it to everyone! I've just delivered the book after one place on time, and I'm starting to think about my 9th book, and it is just for me, it's like a maze, and you just draw a line to the maze and then you hit a dead end and then you have to go back to the beginning.
I think I'm also quite fussy for the reader with endings, and it's hard because I don't like it when they get crazy and everybody starts killing everybody and tying each other up in basements and all of that. I overall liked this novel! There are so many great elements to this fantastic book, and it is really worth checking out. I definitely have some drafts where the ending just didn't live up to that promise. In addition, if you're caught up on all of my episodes, I would love for you to join my Patreon group. I thought the conceit was so sort of large that it would have been interesting regardless. I think it should be more of an explanation, like, oh my God, I finally understand. 06:23] Gillian: Yes, so that is something Jen learns relatively early on. However, the more she digs and the further back in time she travels, the more Jen begins to realise that there is so much about her family and her past that she didn't know, and she'll have to find out every single secret to find a way to stop everything. 42:47] Cindy: So I had to kind of go back and say I'm sorry. You would know what to expect from an ending. Rather, she has woken up on the day before the crime. Date Completed: July 1, 2022. I mean, I really liked your characters, but they're put in these situations that make them do things they would ordinarily do. Highly compelling and enjoyable. 33:53] Gillian: Yeah, so I think it's quite common to have a different US and UK cover because they're different markets, definitely.
24:28] Cindy: Well, I was also wondering as I was reading how the book would end, and obviously we're not going to talk about the ending in terms of spoiling it, but did you always know how it was going to end, or was that something that you had to work through as you wrote? I wouldn't kill someone. Which one would you recommend next for me? Clues and red herrings are woven throughout the novel and there are a couple of twists that actually made me gasp. And I thought that was so interesting because we don't really think about that day to day, and you're only interacting with everybody's present person, of course. I'm in awe' JANE FALLON. She now totally reinterprets some of the things that he's doing.
Let's talk about the climax when Jen is able to stop the accidental kidnapping of Eve. I do find having to rack my brains more to sort of get people to do what I want them to do, because I've sort of already done some of those things in other books. Once she processes that impossible fact, Jen goes about trying to change what is going to happen by finding the knife and taking it out of Todd's bag. So I'm glad it delivered for you. Original, engrossing and full of uncertainty, I was completely drawn into this story. We've all been there. But I prefer reading about people who I feel like are acting pretty rationally. 27:38] Cindy: I guess that's what I was trying to say, and you said it much more succinctly and clearly is if you start out with this really great premise, you have to have a really great ending. So, yeah, it took us a really long time and a lot of brainstorming to sort of settle on something that hints at the time element, but still sounds like a spiller and still sounds interesting in its own right. We talk about foreign rights and what it feels like to be published stateside and in the UK and what it feels like to get option for TV or things like that. What was it like reading the story in reverse? She's so confused and so blindsided that you're thinking, okay, I've got to know what happened here. She has captured the real turmoil of Jen as a mother who only wants to protect her child, the intensity of her relationship with her husband Kelly, but also the growing mistrust the more she learns of the past. 42:51] Gillian: You're right.
Gillian's law background shines through again, just enough to make you realise you're reading a very well researched book. She gets to see events that she lived through from a totally different perspective, one with foreknowledge. It was nice to see her with some flaws but nothing that would turn me off to her character, and I also got to see her work on those flaws and contemplate things she would (and did) change by having this second chance to relive some of these days.
