The story starts off with Wallace Price, our main character, and we can immediately tell that Wallace… is not a nice person. From the moment your born, you're dying. We always think we have so much of it, but when it really counts, we don't have enough at all. He mentions that he knows he does not have the same mother as his brother and sister, Frothar and Dagny, information given to him by the Whispering Lady. Mei brings an obstinate Wallace to Charon's Crossing tea shop where he meets Nelson Freeman, another ghost, and Nelson's grandson Hugo Freeman, a ferryman who is responsible for preparing Wallace to move on to the afterlife.
